Haircare Review: Function of Beauty Shampoo, Conditioner, Hair Mask, and Hair Serum

My hair has been extra dry recently so when Function of Beauty offered to help with their new hair mask and hair serum, I immediately said yes.

As with personalized hair products I’ve tried, Function of Beauty asked questions about my hair types, concerns, and goals. For reference, I have thin, fine, straight hair and scalp that easily gets irritated or oily depending on its mood. I wanted to hydrate, replenish, and strengthen my hair while soothing and nourishing my roots and scalp.

As per usual, the Shampoo and Conditioner smell amazing (I chose the flower to the people scent.) It made my hair smooth and less tangled after rinsing. I am one of those people who shampoo their hair every day while conditioning its ends daily as well. So far, these two helped moisturized my hair without making my scalp too oily. They just provided a balance.

The Hair Mask promises to deeply condition, hydrate, and nourish my hair using argan oil, japanese sake, and jojoba ester oil. The creamy mask is easily massaged on the scalp. Whenever I mask, I pay extra attention to the ends of my hair as it’s where my strands get the driest. While using this, my hair is the softest and smoothest it has gotten. It stayed like that for about three days before I felt the need to apply again.

Something that can be used once a day or for touch-ups, the Hair Serum aims to manage the hair, smooth frizz, and enhance its shine. It contains argan oil, annatto oil, jojoba oil, and sunflower oil. Despite these ingredients, the hair serum doesn’t feel that oil. This serum actually has a gel texture that makes it easier to use. A testament to how good this is: I wore my hair down, after always putting it into a bun, and used this at the ends. I also used a texturing spray to create and some loose waves and everyone complimented me on how good my hair looks. I felt like the serum helped hold the waves I created and it made my hair look more weighted instead of fine and frizzy. It doesn’t leave it looking limp and oily. This is instant love.

These products are also vegan, cruelty-free, and are made without mineral oil, phthalates, gluten, parabens, and sulfates.

Haircare Review: Ouai Volume Shampoo and Conditioner and Treatment Masque

It’s no secret that my hair is in need of a volume so when Ouai sent over their Volume Shampoo and Conditioner, I immediately tried them.

The Volume Shampoo ($28) promises to boost volume and replenish moisture to the hair while the Volume Conditioner ($26) hydrates, moisturizes, and lifts the strands. Both volumize the hair – not in a messy all over the place way, but in a bouncy, lively kind of way.

They also both smell amazing and I like that their scent doesn’t only last during my showers. They also don’t and make my hair too dry or too oily. Most volume-centric products can leave my hair looking frizzy or can make my scalp feel oily but these products don’t do that.

I like using the shampoo if I’m styling my hair afterward because it helps hold the volume and the conditioner if I’m letting my hair down for a smooth but healthy-looking hair. I like to follow the Volume Conditioner with the Rose Hair Oil for extra shine and control.

After a week of putting styling products on my hair, I’ve been using the Treatment Masque ($32) to every weekend for a reset. This hair mask aims to restore and repair the hair using artichoke leaf extract. I put this on first before going through my laborious face and body exfoliation routine during Sunday afternoons. This mask leaves my hair so soft, so smooth, and so fragrant. It’s also easy to rinse off unlike other hair masks as it feels light on the hair. I like that this doesn’t make my scalp oily and instead leaves it hydrated and healthy.

Brand Overview: Skin Syrup

Thai skincare brand Skin Syrup blends natural extracts from Africa, India, Korea and blends it with Thai and Chinese herbs to create products that keep the skin fresh, relaxed, and clean. They sent over their entire line and I had fun playing with all of them.

The Radiance Facial Wash Gel contains indian gooseberry to cleanse and stimulate collagen production, vitamin b to soften, and vitamin b5 to smooth and reduce irritation. This helps me achieve a clean and fresh face. It’s not honestly just an okay product but it does feel gentle on the skin. I prefer cleansing foams to gel so I don’t reach for this often.

The Fresh Mineral Water Spray is honestly a mystery to me. It uses water from a hot spring to keep your skin fresh and hydrated. However, I prefer a more hardworking and more hydrating mist because my skin easily gets dehydrated.

The Radiance Facial Serum contains kigelia africana extract to strengthen and tighten, indian pomegranate extract to protect and brighten, gingko biloba to restore and tighten, licorice extract to balance, ginseng extract to plump and hydrate, and chamomile extract to soothe protect. This feels very light on the skin and it sinks in quickly, making it a good morning serum. It might provide brightening results slower than other but it leaves the skin feeling smooth and bouncy.

The Radiance Facial Moisturizer contains the same ingredients as the Radiance Facial Serum, it also feels lightweight. It has a somewhat runny consistency which gets absorbed quickly into the skin. I usually put this on at daytime because it’s lightweight and doesn’t feel uncomfortable and sticky even when I sweat. However, I cannot differentiate its benefits from the serum so I only end up using this or the serum most days.

Lastly, their Vital Lip Balm contains camellia oil, rosehip oil, beeswax, babana oil extract, and jojoba oil to soothe, moisturize, and heal the lips. It feels nourishing and moisturizing on the lips so it’s a good everyday lip balm option. However, for lips that are chapped or lips that easily dries, you might need a more moisturizing option.

To be honest, these face products might be too gentle for me. Their packaging is genius and would be great travel companions and are good at nourishing and moisturizing the skin but I tend to look for stronger products if I really need hydration and brightening.

They have three variants of shower gel. Revive shower smells and feels refreshing and leaves the skin soft and smooth after wash. It claims to reduce dark spots but I have yet to notice its effects on me. Activate is my most favorite among the three because of the fruity scent. Calm has a soothing scent perfect to cap off the day. I like using this on days when my skin feels dry and needs a bit of calm.

For haircare, the Restore Scalp Treatment Shampoo lathers quickly when massaged onto the hair. It has a refreshing smell and doesn’t dry out my hair. The Restore Scalp Treatment Conditioner is not creamy and melts immediately onto the hair as it is applied. It’s pretty to look at as it has shimmers in it. It’s non-drying and it did soften my hair but I always feel like I need to use more than the usual amount to cover for all areas.

To soften the skin, the Revive Lotion has a runny consistency. It’s so lightweight that it feels as if you’re just applying water on your skin, only that it leaves it moisturized and smelling nice – this applies to the Calm Lotion variant too. It smells very floral and absorbs really nice in seconds. They are both easy to use and carry around, thanks to its packaging. It has a nice and relaxing smell too. With these, my skin is left soft and smooth, without any sticky feeling.

The Restore Hair Coat Serum nourishes my hair and scalp to leave it soft and less wavy. I recently had my hair layered so the unwanted waves and flyaways were inevitable. I applied this on my damp hair to see if it would help calm the waves and it surprisingly did. It left my hair soft, less wavy, and looking healthy.

Fresh Beauty Sugar Strawberry Exfoliating Face Wash

The Sugar Strawberry Exfoliating Face Wash from Fresh Beauty ($33) cleanses and exfoliates to refine, soften, and smooth the skin using two sizes of sugar crystals from beetroots, soapberry peel extract, strawberry fruit and blackcurrant fruit extracts, and grapeseed oil. This face cleanser smells a bit like strawberry jam, which isn’t exactly a bad thing since I love strawberries but sometimes, the smell can get a bit concentrated. The actual cleanser has exfoliating sugar cubes that seem to melt with the actual cleanser the more you massage it onto the skin, which for is genius. It exfoliates and calmed my skin in one application. Despite the exfoliating bits, this feels gentle enough for my skin. It lightly exfoliates and, upon rinsing, it leaves the skin slightly smooth. My skin also feels moisturized a bit, not tight or squeaky clean. It’s a good option for some light exfoliation while smelling strawberries.

Wander Beauty Drift Away™ Cleanser

Enjoying all things pink recently so I’m always reaching for the cruelty-free products of Wander Beauty.

I’ve been enjoying the Drift Away™ Cleanser ($32), their gel-to-foam cleanser that promises to cleanse, nourish, and vitalize the skin using seawater, kelp, coconut water, acai fruit extract, and guava extract. This face cleanser has a gel texture that turns into a white paste once rubbed on the skin. Then it transforms into a clear color the more you massage it. It’s honestly an adventure. As instructed, this vegan cleanser is meant to be rinsed with warm water but I had reservations the first time I used it. It feels creamy and pasty on the skin that I thought it wouldn’t be able to remove my makeup and it wouldn’t come off cleanly. I was wrong. It removes everything – makeup and oils. It was able to remove even full-coverage foundation but I had to use an eye makeup remover to remove eyeliners and mascaras. As a first cleanser for every day, this leaves my skin feeling squeaky clean, devoid of oils but not tight or dry.

Ouai Scalp & Body Scrub

When I first started this page, I posted about my adoration for the Wave Spray and the Rose Hair and Body Oil from Ouai because they work well with my extremely dry hair and body.

Another new thing to like is the Scalp & Body Scrub ($38) which promises to deeply cleanse the scalp and skin using sugar crystals, probiotic blend, and coconut oil. First off, this scrub smells luxuriously amazing. Per the website, the scent is so good they made it a fragrance called Melrose Place (sidebar, I have more than enough perfumes but this smells so good.)

As for the product itself, I love it. The sugar crystals are coarse but it doesn’t hurt the skin or the scalp. They’re like crystals that melt onto the skin and leave a lather. It doesn’t leave a film or residue after rinsing, which is a great plus. As a body scrub, my skin just feels cleansed, soft, smooth, and great smelling. Once a week, I use this as a scalp scrub on the weekends to make sure that I have all hair gunk removed as I use texture sprays and hair oils every day to tame flyaways or create added volume. Since the crystals are gentle, it doesn’t hurt the scalp and instead feels relaxing to the scalp.

This is another win for me and a great addition to my selfcare routine.

Sulwhasoo Bloomstay Vitalizing Water

The Bloomstay Vitalizing Water ($75) from Sulwhasoo uses plum blossom and yuzu to hydrate, revitalize, and moisturize the skin. This face toner is watery but it has a certain weight to it. I’ve been applying this at night as my first toner the past few weeks and I’ve been really happy how nourishing it feels on my skin. I also wake up with soft and plump skin afterward.
