Cult Favorite: Briogeo Scalp Revival Collection

I have said this countless times but my hair and my scalp are more sensitive than my face. That’s why I have three kinds of shampoos and conditioners in my shower. Recently, I had some products from the Scalp Revival collection of Briogeo included in my rotation.

The Scalp Revival Collection uses binchotan charcoal, biotin, tea tree oil, and witch hazel to calm irritation, itchiness, flakes and dry scalp. All of which, I can have if I’m not too careful.

I wish Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo ($42) came in a pump so it wouldn’t take that much space in my bathroom shelf. It does the job though. It has a mask-like consistency, thicker than most conditioners, and it feels a bit grainy due to micro-exfoliators. If feels cool on the scalp and leaves my hair feel soft afterward. What I noticed after a few weeks of use, however, is that this prevents my scalp from getting too dry. It also helps with the itching I would feel after a day of staying outdoors and sweating a lot.

I use Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment ($32) before sleeping. I actually have this already in my stash. This is just my go-to when my scalp feels too itchy and oily. It helps balance my scalp.

I also like massaging the Stimulating Therapy Massager ($16) whenever I apply the Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo and the Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment. Aside from it helping me when I apply these products, it also massages my scalp, which feels so relaxing. This just calms me and puts me to sleep. I actually have another scalp massager on my bedside table.

The Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo ($24) is something I don’t use often. Living in a sunny and humid area leaves me with no choice but to wash my hair daily. I only use dry shampoo when my hair is feeling a bit oily to control and balance my scalp throughout the day.

The Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo is a nice discovery and it complements my use of the Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment to prevent itching, dryness, and oiliness while keeping my hair looking healthy and feeling soft.

Makeup Review: BareMinerals Mineralist Hydra-Smoothing Lipstick

The Mineralist Hydra-Smoothing Lipstick from BareMinerals is a vegan lipstick that promises hydration, nourishment, and pigmentation while smoothing and softening the lips using european sea buckthorn fruit oil, mediterranean olive oil, moroccan pomegranate extract, and jojoba oil. It’s also formulated without parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, and synthetic fragrance. They have 25 shades from nude to reds to cater to a variety of skin tones.

They sent me the entire collection, all 25 shades, which I’m really thankful for. Not only that I got to try the shades, I finally found the right brown for me (something with a pink or peach tone) and I also knew how nude I can go (apparently lighter than I thought I would).

The lipsticks have a fragrant scent. The actual product is very pigmented but it applies almost like a balm would – soft and smooth. Due to the texture and finish, this doesn’t last long. However, applying these feel like just applying a lip balm, only with the color payoff of a lipstick. They don’t emphasize the lines of the lips and my lips felt soft and smooth after use. It’s indeed hydrating than most lipsticks.

I have been constantly reaching for the shades Presence (antique mauve), Memory (neutral rose), Grace (nude pink), and Focus (muted mauve) for every day while Fortitude (plum berry) and Intuition (brick red) is what I’ve been using for nights out.

Makeup Review: Kosas Revealer Concealer

I have a lot of concealers, most of them target to cover my dark undereye area, which is also super dry. It also has one deep line each. An unfortunate combination, if we’re being honest. I can use a concealer with a matte finish, it will conceal darkness but it will emphasize the lines and texture under my eyes. I can go for a creamy but most of them don’t last or it moves around. I also once found a concealer that’s just perfect for my needs but they don’t offer it in my shade. It’s actually more difficult for me to find a good everyday concealer than finding a foundation that would work for my skin. I only have less than a handful of concealers I really use and the Revealer Concealer, a new product from Kosas, looks really promising.

This cruelty-free and leaping bunny certified concealer promises to be super creamy and brightening while covering dark circles and blemishes in a skin-like and dewy finish. It contains pink algae and caffeine to brighten, arnica and panthenol to soothe, and peptides and hyaluronic acid to plump the skin.

It’s true, it is creamy but if applies thin and smooth on the skin. It’s super pigmented, though, so I swipe excess product from its doe-foot applicator before applying some on my skin. I have been using this for a couple of weeks now and I have noticed that it felt hydrating on the skin. Even without using an eye cream beforehand, I never once saw this settle on the texture and lines under my eyes.

I got the shades Revealer Tone 5.5 (medium with olive undertones), Revealer Tone 06 (tan with olive undertones), and Revealer Tone 07 (tan with neutral undertones). I use Revealer Tone 5.5 to brighten my skin. Of course, I don’t do this every day but when I went for full makeup, this is what I use for more radiance on the center of my face. Revealer Tone 06 covers my dark undereye circle and it just makes me look awake and energized. I sometimes use this even without foundation because it gives me a cleaner look. The Revealer Tone 07 is what I use to spot conceal, which is rare, and to cover some red areas on my skin like under my nose.

I just love everything that Kosas makes and that’s a difficult task to do. Congratulations and love you, guys.

Skincare Review: Huangjisoo Sugar No:rinse Cleansing Pads, Sakura Peeling Radiance Pads, and Mugwort Rescue Soothing Pads

I have been traveling quite a bit recently and have been using these pads from the k-beauty Huangjisoo. Contained in tubs, these pads are travel-friendly and easy to use.

The Sugar No: rinse Cleansing Pads using micellar water, sugar, and lactobacillus ferment filtrate to remove make-up and dirt. These pads are vegan and cruelty-free and they remove makeup well without it feeling sticky. Used without rinsing needed afterward, it leaves the skin feeling soft after removing makeup. I usually use two to three pads to completely remove my makeup. I use the Pure Perfect Cleansing Oil after this one to remove heavy eye makeup and then their Pure Daily Foaming Cleanser to fully cleanse the skin.

Containing cherry blossom and echinacea, the Sakura Peeling Radiance Pads promises to moisturize and brighten the skin. This leaves the skin feeling and looking fresh. It has a clean smell and sinks in quickly onto the skin without leaving any residue. After a few weeks of use (twice to thrice a week) it helped smooth my skin and leaves my skin with a rosy glow.

The Mugwort Rescue Soothing Pads aims to soothe and moisturize the skin using sea mugwort and cica complex. This feels good on the skin, especially on irritated areas. I usually leave a piece of the pad on the irritated area/zit for a few minutes to reduce redness to spot treat. Used all over the face, this leaves the skin feeling moisturized without feeling sticky.

Brand Overview: Kinship

I was excited to try Kinship‘s products as soon as I saw them, mainly because of the fun, bright and colorful packaging. Aside from the cuteness factor, their products are cruelty-free, leaping bunny certified, reef-safe, and are free of GMO organisms. Their packaging is also made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, 100% PCR paper and from Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials.

I first tried the Naked Papaya Gentle Enzyme Face Cleanser, which has papaya, jojoba oil, and sunflower oil. It feels as great as it smells, with a light fruity smoothie scent that gently strips dirt and makeup off my face. I love it as a morning cleanser since it makes my face supple enough and ready for the day ahead.

Meanwhile, the Insta Swipe Lemon Honey AHA Pads are also something to love. Unlike most acids, this one isn’t extremely strong and has a sweet, citrus scent. It doesn’t dry my skin out. But even if it’s gentle, it does a great job of smoothening out my skin and reducing those small blemishes and bumps.

The Supermello Hydrating Gel Cream is a favorite too. First off, it smells like marshmallows so what’s not to love? With hyaluronic acid, marshmallow root and coconut water, it keeps my skin extremely soft, without making it greasy. I also love that I don’t need to put a lot of it to feel the effects.

The Pimple Potion, a retinol and salicylic acid acne treatment. It does take a while for it to get rid of pimples, but it’s a good spot treatment if you have sensitive skin and react badly to stronger products.

There’s also the Self Reflect Probiotic Moisturizing Sunscreen, providing SPF 32 coverage. It’s light, not too sticky and provides a bit of moisture, so it protects my face, without making it feel as oily as other facial sunscreens might. However, I prefer sunscreen with a higher SPF every day.

So while there were a few bumps, overall I’m a fan of Kinship‘s products. They not only look good on my skincare shelf, but they also have a good effect on my skin. Overall, their products are worth checking out as they are gentle and nourishing.
