Skincare Review: Hanskin Pore Cleansing Balm (BHA) and Pore Cleansing Oil (BHA)

As someone who simply used a cleansing foam and called it skincare, the discovery of cleansing oils and cleansing balms when I was in Korea is almost as good as discovering that the baker of your favorite chocolate cake is your neighbor.

So, no matter how many cleansing balms and cleansing oils I own, I always welcome trying another first cleanser, especially from a brand that’s I’ve heard when I first got into skincare.

Hanskin offers cleansing products suitable for your skin type, which intrigued me. Most brands only offer one variant. They sent me the Pore Cleansing Balm (BHA) and Pore Cleansing Oil (BHA).

The Pore Cleansing Balm (BHA) promises to remove makeup and impurities, control breakouts and oil, and fight blackheads using salicylic and a blend of argan, jojoba and peppermint oils.

This has a balmy texture but it feels oily once you massage it on the skin. It melts into a heavy balm consistency but doesn’t leave a film upon rinsing. It removes everyday makeup but needs more massaging if I have waterproof makeup or complicated eye looks. It also leaves my skin soft and supple after rinsing. This, however, does not emulsify easily so I rub this onto my hands to breakdown the product before applying it on my skin.

On the other hand, the Pore Cleansing Oil [BHA] uses salicylic acid, a blend of fruit oils, including orange, lemon, and grapefruit, as well as olive and jojoba oils, to cleanse the skin and prevent breakouts. The watery oil consistency leaves the skin feeling moist. It leaves a bit of a film after wash but this is easier to use than the balm because it easily emulsifies with water. The filmy feeling is okay, since I always do a second cleanse, but I like my first cleansers to not leave a trail as it makes me feel like I haven’t removed every grime on my skin. This is best removed with a warm cloth, which I don’t really do. However, in this method, it leaves the skin cleansed and smooth. Two pumps can remove everyday makeup and dirt.

I like using these when I’m about to get my period because my hormones are on overdrive during that time of the time and I need all the help that I can get. However, I did not see a huge difference in using both compared to other cleansing oils and balms that don’t cater to a specific skin type. As a cleansing balm lover, though, it surprised me that I enjoyed using the Pore Cleansing Oil (BHA) more as it removed makeup and dirt faster and easier.

Skincare Review: Holifrog Cleansers

I’m one of those people who believe in using a different cleanser to meet a certain skin need. So receiving four different cleansers from Holifrog isn’t overwhelming at all.

I use the Kissimmee Vitamin F Therapy Balmy Wash as a first cleanser to remove makeup. It does remove foundation and everyday makeup products but I use a different balm for long-wearing and waterproof products. This cleanser doesn’t lather or emulsify. It feels balmy, as advertised and leaves a bit of a film after rinsing so this is best removed with a damp cleansing cloth. It does leave the skin feeling soft, though.

To clarify and brighten, the Shasta AHA Refining Acid Wash helps clear and brighten the skin. I use this when my skin is looking dull and feeling clogged as it contains glycolic, mandelic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids. It also feels gentle on the skin.

The Superior Omega Nutritive Gel Wash promises to cleanse oily skin using Probacillus Revive, lactobacillus, kombucha, grapeseed oil, broccoli seed oil, flaxseed oil, camellia seed oil, and sea buckthorn oil. It has a gentle natural smell and it feels really gentle on the skin when you lather and after rinsing. It doesn’t foam much and yet it leaves you with a clean feeling after wash. It’s meant for oily skin types but it doesn’t completely strip the skin. I like using this on a normal good skin day when my only problem is excess oil.

I enjoyed using the Tashmoo Water Lily Nourishing Milky Wash when I was in Europe because my skin didn’t get thoroughly oily in the climate there. This, as promised, nourished my skin while gently cleansing it. It contains amino acids, water lily root, and lotus flowers, panthenol, blue-green algae, apricot kernel oil, sunflower oil, vitamin e, and aloe vera.

Overall, if you are looking for a cruelty-free cleanser that is gentle and nourishing to the skin, you will find a Holifrog Cleanser that suits your skin type.

Cult Favorite: Farmacy Beauty Green Clean

Even though I enjoy the smell of Very Cherry Clean from Farmacy Beauty, the unscented Green Clean ($34) is a nice break. Of course, I like this. Aside from its actual ability to remove dirt, impurities, and just about any form of makeup, I love this because of its solid consistency that forms into a gentle lightweight lather that doesn’t leave a trace when it’s rinsed. This is how I like my cleansing balms to be and based on reviews, a lot of people like it as well.

It uses sunflower and ginger root oils, turmeric extract, moringa extract, and papaya enzymes to remove makeup without stripping or drying the skin, remove impurities, sunscreen residue, and exfoliate the complexion.

What’s the difference between this one and Very Cherry Clean? Green Clean is the no-frills and gentle elder sister. She’s the laid-back cleansing balm that gets the job done. If you do not have other concerns to solve and just want a straightforward makeup remover that doesn’t leave a residue, you go for this one. I believe Very Cherry Clean will work better for those looking for nice-smelling first cleanser with brightening benefits.

If I had to choose, what would I pick? I’m Green Clean and Very Cherry Clean’s mother so, I love them both equally.

Skincare Review: Farmacy Beauty Very Cherry Clean

I have been cleansing with the Very Cherry Clean from Farmacy Beauty for a few weeks now and I’m loving it. It’s a vitamin c infused cleansing balm that promises to brighten, firm, hydrate, and exfoliate the skin while melting away dirt and makeup. It contains acerola cherry, sunflower seed oil, moringa seed oil, moringa extract, and papaya extract.

As a balm lover, I found that this has a different slip than other cleansing balms. It does melt into the skin but it feels denser than other balms. I have no problems with it though. Aside from smelling like cherry candies, I feel that the consistency of the balm helps it evenly spread on the skin. It can remove even my waterproof mascaras and my full-coverage foundations quickly and without blurring my vision or hurting my eyes. As promised, it melts easily and can be rinsed with water, just the way I like my cleansing balms. It leaves the skin feeling cleansed, smooth, and soft.

This is a limited-edition but I hope it becomes a permanent product in the Farmacy Beauty lineup because it’s has become one of my favorite cleansing balms.
