Skincare Review: Paula’s Choice Defense Essential Glow Moisturizer SPF 30, Nightly Reconditioning Moisturizer, and Antioxidant Pore Purifier

The new Defense range from Paula’s Choice promises to target pollution, blue light, and smog while delivering nutrients and antioxidants. This is interesting for me, living in an urban area because I’m facing environmental aggressors daily.

First off, I’m just really amazed that PC seems to have it all because the moisturizers in this line really got my moisturizer bias down pat.

The Essential Glow Moisturizer SPF 30 ($29) aims combines sun protection with licorice, kiwi, argan, niacinamide, vitamin c, and other plant and vitamin-derived antioxidants to defend skin against air pollution and the harmful effects of blue light exposure.

This has a thick texture and I was scared to use it in the morning at first because of the heaviness. It also doesn’t apply that smoothly. It almost feels like it has silicone in it. However, it kept my face plump the whole day and has maintained the glowy appearance of my skin. It also plays well with my matte foundations and doesn’t aggravate the oiliness of my skin. For sheer and dewy foundations, though, my face will feel oily but won’t look like it. Also, a note, sheer foundation felt thicker over this. I love that this has SPF so I do not have to layer that much in the morning. However, this feels a bit clogging on warmer days so I will have to use a thinner and more hydrating moisturizer come the warmer months. It also might have a bit of a white cast for those with darker skin tones so I wish this will have a tinted version.

The Nightly Reconditioning Moisturizer ($29) has flaxseed, wild cherry, and arugula to soften, clarify, and protect the skin from environmental aggressors such as HEV/blue light from smartphones.

Unlike its morning moisturizer counterpart, this is extremely light and watery. It also applies thinly and leaves the skin feeling like velvet. It’s a good base for my sleeping mask because if its consistency The smell is something to get used to, though, as it has a heavy medicinal scent. For my skin, this needs to be combined with more hydrating skincare products for me not to wake up with too oily a skin the morning after.

The Defense line also has an Antioxidant Pore Purifier ($31), a pore-refining treatment that contains salicylic acid and antioxidants to neutralize airborne pollutants and blue light exposure. It also has azelaic acid and vitamin c to brighten the skin.

Since I am not experiencing breakouts, I only use this as a spot treatment. It has helped calm upcoming blemishes and fastens healing of some irritations.

I would recommend these to those who want to start anti-aging products early and want to protect their skin from environmental aggressors.
